I smell : maggi being made in the office pantry..

I crave : for Malay food at times.

I search : for meanings.

I wonder : at life.

I regret : not!

I care : only for those who want to help themselves.

I am not : docile by nature.

I believe : in God and His ability to set all things right.

I dance : never.

I sing : only at weddings, where my voice is mixed with so many others that it cant cause any harm… he he.. and ofcourse silently along with the koshur mousiki and nasheeds…

Yay! Its spring!

I noticed the first flowers of Spring.

Yes! Spring has announced its arrival. With the sun shining brightly, as if smiling down on us. The gentle breeze carrying with it the scent of the first flowers of spring.

I saw a few daffodils bloom and I know there is going to be a splash of colors around me soon.

A bright colorful environment .. . oh! Its spring!

Its snowing!

It has been snowing. Well its been like that for many mornings. I see the snow. Its snows and snows and we have just about an inch of snow everywhere.. and then it stops and then the sun shines. 🙂

But today…

today its been snowing and its snowing like it wouldnt stop!

the snow seems to be in no mood to stop….

A year of wordpress

A year on wordpress. I had created my first blog (just created it without really contributing to it much, many years back.) It was motivation by a friend (you know who you are) who got me started with blogging. My sakooterspeaks on blogsource generated quite some interest and I got more into the blogosopher. There were problems with the service provider which had me decide on moving on to a different service provider — and wordpress I chose.

Blogging on wordpress has certainly been without any issues. There have been times when I had 3/4 posts written in a day and there have been times when I have practically hibernated and disappeared with not a thought to put in words…

Its 2008 and I see the archives going back to 2007 January and I say to myself — a year on wordpress!

I read the earlier posts and its sort of like a diary — tracing my thought process over a year — and yet maybe a way to record history.

Whenever I read history, I think that history is recorded by the winners — and it is hard to understand the past from the common man’s perspective. Blogging is certainly changing it all. For each post is history recorded — from just about anybody’s perspective.

The thought makes me smile and wonder what it would be like to read history say a 100 years from now…

Chillay Kalaan

Chillay Kalaan– or the 40 coldest days in Kashmir start from 21st Decemeber, followed by Chilla Baccha, which is less harsh. Generally in Kashmir, people wait for Chillay Kalaan, preparing themselves to meet the chill that is about to make life difficult.

Winter being a part and parcel of the Kashmiri way of life has made the lifestyle of the Kashmiris from the oldest times prepared to meet this breathtakingly beautiful monster that makes life very difficult. With roads blocked, and all commodities of need unavailable in the market, Kashmiris had chosen a way of life to make best of the winter months.

Preparation for winter used to start way ahead, with women drying vegetables and other products to be used in the cold winter — All’e Hacche, Wangan Hacche, Rowangan Hacche and even dried fish. The other popular method of preservation was making pickles — Aanchaar — be it of the vegetables or meat. Rice grain and pulses were kept stored at home for the same winter months.

But that was then. Over the years with commodities in winter becoming available via the Jammu Srinagar highway, and so called “modern” lifestyle where there is no place for haccha, a lot of other things have also changed.

And what I find rather noteworthy is the fact that even the Chillay Kalaan has modernised. Ever since the onset of Chillay Kalaan we are having a very sunny (and cold) winter. A dry winter sun. Whatever happened to Chillay Kalaan is yet unexplainable — they blame it on the environment etc…

well well that is for the Chillay Kalaan that is overpowered by the sun…

Things are getting very strange in Kashmir….
